RTO details of a vehicle: what the number plate tells you

A state-series registration number encodes two things about where a vehicle came from: the state or union territory in its first two letters, and the Regional Transport Office that registered it in the two digits after. That is what the lookup above gives you — the registering RTO and its office name, decoded in your browser against 1,336 codes, each state's list carrying the sources and the date it was last checked.

What it does not give you is who owns the vehicle. Owner name, address, engine and chassis numbers are not encoded in a number plate, and this site holds and publishes no vehicle-owner records at all. Those records sit with the transport department itself, on the government's own Vahan and Parivahan services — we are an independent guide, not a government service, and we reproduce none of it. Two limits, both answered below. The code names where the vehicle was registered, not where it is driven or where its owner lives today. And the all-India Bharat series carries no state code at all — a 22 BH 1234 AA plate opens with year digits instead, which is why the lookup answers BH separately.
